Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25X56 Rifle Scope Review

January 2018 rolled in a new year, and the new year rolled in the Mark 5HD rifle scope series!  The brand-new scope line comes in with two models: the 5-25x56 and 3.6-18x44.  Since we have a choice to feature one or the other, of course we went with the big boy to review!

The 5-25x56 scope is a big whistler in price and a heifer in size, but it's not without reason.  The huge 35 mm tube is thick, strong, and durable.  It also provides extra adjustment range to max out at 34.9 mils in elevation.  This allows for three revolutions to get tight groupings for those extreme long-range shots - you know, the kind of shots expert snipers make.

Those long shots aren't without accuracy and precision either.  To hit within the 10 ring on your target, you can make extremely precise .1 (1/10th) adjustments on both elevation and windage.  We're talking about dialing in the Mark 5 for hyper-accurate shots that no hunter will ever need.

But, the Mk 5 is a dual-purpose scope that a serial hunter will want to add to his collection if he's willing to dish out the cash for it.  On the other hand, a competition sniper will definitely want to see what the Mark 5 can do for his international meet among the world's most elite marksmen.

Aiding in precision are the multiple reticles available with the scope.  This particular Mark 5 model features the Tremor 3 reticle designed by Horus Vision in the first focal plane (FFP).  It has rapid ranging marks above the center crosshair and a grid-style reticle for bullet drop and wind-drift correction.  It's a serious reticle without being overwhelming with tons of potential for the rifleman.

A side focus allows for parallax correction, weatherproof construction enables use in the harshest terrains and conditions, and a throw lever gets you changing between power ranges in an instant.  The Mark 5 features a fast-focus eyepiece with Leupold's patented Twilight Max HD Light Management System and DiamondCoat 2 external lens coatings.

How can there be a single fault against this beaut' of scope?  If you can afford to buy one, you're the only one who has a right to find a flaw - that is, if you can find any at all!

Pros:

  • Throw lever
  • High power
  • Wide adjustment range
  • Multiple FFP reticles available
  • 1/10th MIL

Cons:

  • Price

Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25X56 Q&A:

Is the Mark 5HD a Lighter-weight Scope for its Class?

Supposedly, it's 20 ounces lighter than other scopes of similar caliber, but comparing it to some of the biggest scopes we've featured, such as the NightForce NXS, it falls right in line with comparable weight.  It's heavy for a hunting rifle scope, but it may be right in line for an A-class tactical scope.  However, when you consider it has a huge aperture, 35 mm tube diameter, and extra magnification than the other premium scopes we've featured, it does hold up to be a lightweight scope after all.

Are there any Mark 5HD Scopes with MOA Reticles?

Unfortunately, the Mk 5HD series of scopes all feature MIL-based reticles.

What are the Leupold Mk 5 Reticles Available with the Scope?

This Mark 5 model features the non-illuminated Tremor 3 reticle.  There is also the TMR (Tactical Milling Reticle) in both illuminated and non-illuminated.  The CCH (Combat Competition Hunter) and H-59 reticles are non-illuminated.  There is in a change in price for the scope depending on the reticle choice.

What is the Close Focus Distance to Adjust for Parallax?

The closest distance the Mk 5 scope can adjust for parallax is 75 yards.  Use the side focus to adjust for the range your target is in to eliminate parallax issues.  Swing by our tips for using a side focus to properly adjust for parallax.

What is a FFP Reticle?

An FFP (first or front focal plane) reticle can be used at any magnification.  Subtensions remain the same relative to the target, but the crosshairs will change in size as you change power.  For more info on the differences between SFP (second or rear focal plane) and FFP reticles, see our "Reticle Subtension Explained" article.

What Shooting Applications is the Leupold Mark 5 Scope for?

The Mark 5HD is a dual-purpose scope for both hunting and tactical environments.  However, given the extreme accuracy, extreme long-range potential, and overall quality of the scope, it's geared towards tactical environments such as combat, military, and law enforcement purposes.  It's also a high-performing scope for competitions and for use in low light conditions.

What is the Difference Between the Mark 5HD and the Mark 6 Series?

Essentially, they're different scopes at heart.  The Mark 5HD series features 35 mm tubes, 5:1 zoom ratio, and a throw lever; non-locking fast-focus eyepiece, M5C3 ZeroLock adjustments, and 6061-T6 aircraft quality aluminum construction.

The Mark 6 series price is more expensive, has 6:1 zoom ratio, and a locking fast-focus eyepiece; blackened lens edges, 34 mm tube, and an M5C2 elevation adjustment dial.

Noteworthy Features:

  • High-quality glass and coatings for bright and clear image quality in low light
  • 35 mm tube body for added durability and robustness with increased adjustment range
  • Throw lever to make near-instant adjustments to power range
  • 1/10th MIL adjustments for extreme precision and accuracy at extreme long ranges
  • Multiple reticles including illuminated options available

Our Verdict On The Leupold Mark 5 HD Rifle Scope

According to the bull's-eye, the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25x56 rifle scope is capable of getting you within the 10 ring no matter the distance - if you have the right equipment.  This scope is a serious buy for serious shooters.  While the Mark 5HD line may not top the Mark 6 or Mark 8 series, it's a welcome option to those of us who want premium without spending over $3000. We even named it as one of the best FFP scopes in 2019.

We won't judge you if more than $2000 is still a luxury buy that you won't ever be able to bring yourself to spend on a scope.  Just owning a Leupold gives you instant bragging rights.  If you're a hunter, consider the Leupold VX-3i rifle scope if you're on a budget but you want something dependable.

But, if tactical or competition use is the aim of the game, the NightForce NXS 5.5-22x56 is an excellent buy.  It's still expensive, but at least you'll see some savings over the Leupold.  NightForce Optics knows tactical like the back of their hand - you won't regret your buy!

Leupold brought in the Mark 5HD to help level the ground between the Mark 6 and 8 and the Mark 4s.  It's a class of its own, and it's worth every penny if you dare to spend it.  You might want a permission slip first from your better half if you intend on spending the big bucks!
