Armasight Vampire 3X Core IIT Review
Armasight introduced their proprietary CORE (Ceramic Optical Ruggedized Engine) image tubes back in 2012, and then they stuck it on their Gen 1 scopes to see how well it would fare. The result is the Vampire 3x Core IIT night vision rifle scope.
It’s better than a Gen 1, but it’s not a Gen 2. However, its quality can competitively vie with Gen 2 tech even though it’s in a category of its own. How do we describe this hybrid? By what it can do!
The Vampire 3x has resolution that can beat even some Gen 2 scopes with photocathode sensitivity levels upwards of 400μm/lm, high 60-70 lp/mm resolution, and all-glass multi-coated lenses. This in and of itself is the reason so many users find it more than capable to use as a standalone optic in challenging ambient light conditions.
So, do you need an IR? All Gen 1 scopes will require use of an IR to get acceptable detection ranges, clarity, and brightness. However, this isn’t an ordinary Gen 1 scope, is it? While the Vampire comes with a detachable XLR-IR850 long range LED illuminator, you might find you may not end up needing it since the scope does the job just fine without it. But, you’ll have the IR just in case you get an exceptionally dark night.
Removing the scope and going back to iron sights during the day will be a breeze with the Quick Release Double Lever Mount. Pop it back on come nighttime and you’re ready to go. The illuminated red cross reticle has a variable brightness feature, and adjustments are made in 1/2 MOA clicks.
However, there’s no getting around the fact that the scope is heavy at 3 lbs. It will balance out just fine on something like a .308, but on an AR, some users found it top heavy. A few, random defective scopes bypassed quality control, and detection ranges may only be good out to 150 yards max. But, most buyers concur that it’s better than a traditional Gen 1 scope!
- CORE tech
- Quick release mount
- All-glass optics
- Large 108 mm aperture
Armasight Vampire 3X CORE IIT Q&A:
CORE is a new technology that integrates a ceramic-coated image intensifier tube that’s made from artificial Nano-sized crystals. These crystals have lite conducting properties and can withstand great amounts of impacts and force and remain intact. CORE tech allows a Gen 1 scope to provide performance and features almost in parity to a Gen 2 scope.
The idea is to improve the design, durability, and resolution of a Gen 1 scope to improve overall performance while keeping it affordable for every shooter. Their prices will be cheaper than Gen 2 devices, and most likely under $1000.
IIT – Image Intensifier Tube. It’s the main component of the scope that contains the materials used to create night vision. It’s where all the chemical and electrical goodness happens to get you a clear sight-picture in the dark!
The Vampire night vision rifle scope can be mounted to calibers up to a 30-06.
The extra size and weight may be due to the extra components in the CORE technology that makes the scope. Another reason is due to the huge 108 mm objective lens. The extra-large aperture certainly requires more glass which means more weight. However, it also means maximum light transmittance which means a better image for you.
The only time the Armasight NV rifle scope may shut down automatically is if it’s being exposed to bright and dynamic light that can threaten the integrity of the IIT. If the scope is exposed to an illuminance level that hovers above 40 lux for longer than 10 seconds, the scope will automatically shut down.
It only requires one CR123 Lithium 3V battery to get up to 40 hours of operation. If you prefer rechargeable batteries, you can use one CR123 3.2V battery.
You can expect your Vampire 3x scope, soft carry case, and one XLR-IR850 long range LED illuminator; lens cleaning tissue, instruction manual/warranty card, and one CR123 lithium 3V battery.
The NV rifle scope is covered under an Armasight warranty for a period of 2 years.
- CORE IIT technology for a more robust scope with improved resolution
- Long-lasting battery life of up to 40 hours
- Quick release double lever mount for fast removal and reattachment
- All-glass, multi-coated optics for maximum light transmittance potential

Our Verdict on the Armasight Vampire 3x Night Vision Scope
To light your trail through the dark, the Armasight Vampire 3x CORE IIT rifle scope will be a “fang-tastic” predator aid to help you take down your target. The price is right, tech is state-of-the-art, and it comes with everything you need to get hunting tonight. However, consider the weight if you’re a little weak in the arms.
If you’re not completely sold on CORE technology (why wouldn’t you be?), you can always see what Gen 2 scopes run for. The Armasight Nemesis 6x Gen 2+SD scope is a beauty and one of our favorites. We know you’ll like the upgrades too as Gen 2 work is ever so close to Gen 3 quality. But, you might not be a fan of the price jump.
This leads us to offering you a traditional Gen 1 scope that’s more price friendly than almost any other NV rifle scope in the market. The Firefield NVRS 3.5×42 scope is definitely cheaper and lighter in weight, but it also has that quick release mount the Vampire sports too! We love bonus features.
If you’re planning on staying up through the night, you’ll need a NV optic that can keep up with your pace. You may as well have a nocturnal predator with up to 40 hours of stamina on your side!
